CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- A construction company makes an unusual find while renovating a house.

The company is renovating a duplex on M. L. King Blvd. On Monday, they found 91 sticks of dynamite in a box embedded under a stairway.

The ATF notified the Chattanooga Police Department.

The Chattanooga Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit completed the 8 hour removal process for the dynamite. CPD explosives technicians worked for several hours to prepare the dynamite for removal. Once it was removed, it was taken to a secured area where is was properly and safely disposed of.

It is not known how long the explosive was stored in the duplex nor who the original owner was. The sticks possessed the ability to cause massive damage to the duplex and several surrounding homes had it detonated on-site.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News has a crew working this story and will have new details online and on Eyewitness News at 5:00 and 6:00.
