CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)-- New details in a murder at British Woods Apartments.

Police say a mother was brutally beaten and stabbed repeatedly and her children discovered her body.

"It was terrible. Just a terrible scene," says Rebecca Royval, spokesperson for the Chattanooga Police Department.

Chattanooga police flooded the British Woods Apartment Complex Wednesday after receiving a call about a missing child.

Once investigators arrived, they found five children with a neighbor. The kids' mother, was dead on the living room floor.

Neighbor Marvin Garner says it was unlike anything he's ever seen.

"Not no killings like that, ya know? Not no stabbings and getting shot. That is just kind of weird man," says Garner.

Police say 35-year-old Chandra Powell was stabbed and cut repeatedly on her face, chest and neck. She also had blunt force trauma to the head.

While her attacker beat her savagely, her two-week-old infant was asleep in the bedroom.

Police say her 11-year-old son found her body.

"A neighbor called 911 after the victim's children found her on the floor when they got home from school," says Royval.

Crime scene investigators were at the home Thursday searching for clues.

Police aren't clear on a motive, but they are sure it was a crime of passion.

The children were placed with protective services.

Garner says his heart goes out to them.

"You know, I am very concerned. Mainly because these are just little kids," says Marvin Garner.

Garner says it's been a relatively quiet neighborhood.

His hope is to never witness another scene like this again.

"Yeah sometimes we get bad apples and you have to watch out for that and these young kids too," says Garner.

Police say they have no suspect.

We did learn Chandra Powell has lived in Chattanooga less than two years and is originally from Indiana.
