UPDATE 2: Kids come home from school to find mom murdered
CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) – The body of a woman has be found in an apartment in the British Woods apartment complex.
The victim, Chandra Powell, age 35, was found by her 11-year-old son and 15 and 16-year-old daughters, lying in the living room floor when they arrived home from school.
Ms. Powell's two week old infant was in the bedroom in a bassinet. The baby was unharmed but transported to T.C. Thompson's as a precautionary measure. Child Protective Services was notified and will determine the placement of the children.
Police initially told Channel 3 that a toddler was also in the home. On Thursday morning, CPD corrected itself to say the infant was the only child inside when the body was discovered.
According to the Hamilton County Medical Examiner's Office, Ms. Powell suffered from multiple injuries including blunt force trauma to the head and numerous stab wounds to the neck, chest, and face.
The examiner's office also stated this case is an obvious homicide with personal motives due to the violent nature of the death.
An autopsy, which will likely be conducted tomorrow, will determine the official cause of death.
There is no suspect information at this time, but investigators are in the process of conducting interviews and canvassing the apartment complex.
The call initially came in to 911 around 2:50 p.m. as a gunshot wound and missing baby.
