Charges pending against church bus driver

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - Charges are pending against a bus driver because police say he did not call police when he ran over a child.

According to a news release emailed to Channel 3 Eyewitness News, Chattanooga Police Traffic Investigators were called to Hickory Valley Road yesterday and discovered that an 8-year-old boy had been hit by a bus. After calling an interpreter to speak with the parents, they learned the child had actually been hit on October 20, at around 8:30 PM. However, the parents never report it.

During the investigation of the incident, police say they learned a church bus carrying children from Hickory Valley Baptist Church was taking children home who all lived on Hickory Valley Road.

The bus driver was dropping children off at their respective apartment buildings when he reportedly stopped at the wrong building and was asked to pull forward to the next building.

An 8-year-old child either fell or jumped from the bus and the bus rolled over him.

The bus driver called the child's parents who then drove him to T.C. Thompson's where he is currently listed in serious but stable condition.

The investigation is not over and charges could come later, according to a police spokesperson.
