UT selects new president
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - University of Tennessee Board of Trustees has picked Joe DiPietro, the chancellor of the UT Institute of Agriculture, as the system's new president.
DiPietro was selected over West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission Chancellor Brian Noland on a vote of 11 to 10 during the board's annual fall meeting on Friday.
Jim Murphy, vice chair of the board, said he expected the vote to be close. Murphy put his support behind DiPietro because of his success at multiple land-grant institutions and his ability to lead his staff.
DiPietro was the dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida from 1997 to 2006 and a former administrator at the University of Illinois, Urbana.
He is scheduled to speak at a press conference Friday afternoon at the university in Knoxville.
