HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A top Republican lawmaker is visiting western North Carolina to campaign alongside one of the party's congressional candidates.
Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor is scheduled to visit Hendersonville for a Tuesday afternoon event with GOP challenger Jeff Miller. The Republicans are trying to regain control of the 11th District seat covering western North Carolina. Democratic Rep. Heath Shuler has represented the district since 2006.
Shuler holds a large fundraising advantage for the final weeks of the race, reporting more than $1.2 million to spend at the beginning of October. Miller is a political rookie who reported having just $100,000 available.
Cantor is the No. 2 Republican leader in the U.S. House.
