Group files lawsuit against City for water treatment

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- A lawsuit is now filed against the City of Chattanooga for a series of sewage spills.
The Tennessee Clean Water Network is suing for violations at the Moccasin Bend Sewage Treatment plant.
The group claims since 2006, the City has discharged more than 300 million gallons of untreated sewage, and it exceeded the maximum e-coli limit.
It also claims nearly 500 sanitary sewer overflows dumped around 35 million gallons of raw sewage into nearby creeks, roads, businesses and private residences.
In August, they issued a 60 day notice of an intent to sue. The group is willing to work with the City to clear up the issues.
The group is critical of the State's enforcement program, and filed a successful suit against Knoxville in 2004.
