CFD: Downtown odor is from sewers

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) – There's something foul in the City of Chattanooga.

According to Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner, fire crews have received nearly two dozen calls about the odor in Downtown and the Northshore since Monday.

Fire crews and Chattanooga Gas technicians have been monitoring the air and say they have found no natural gas leaks.

Garner says the odor is coming from the sewers.  He says while the smell is terrible, there is no danger to the public.

Downtown Chattanooga uses a combined sewage system, relying on rain water to flush the solid waste from the sewers.

Due to the lack rain in the Tennessee Valley, there hasn't been enough rain water to flush the system.
