MARION COUNTY, TN (WRCB) -- Haletown Fire Chief Billy Joe Davis says he'll be busy for the next few months as he and the assistant chief look for a new treasurer for the all-volunteer fire department.
That's because the former treasurer, Billy Joe Henegar, was arrested Friday.
The TBI says Henegar stole $94,000 from the department dating back to April.
"It was about that amount and it is going to be rough, but we are going to make it," says David.
TBI investigators say Henegar used the money to pay for personal expenses, such as credit cards, computer equipment, and a cell phone.
His wife, Holly, was also arrested the same day.
The TBI says as the former Marion county election commissioner, she took $27,000 from her department.
"It is awful shocking. These are my friends," says Herbert Wells, neighbor.
The investigation revealed between July of 2003 and March of this year, Holly wrote more than 100 payroll checks for 34 people who did not work for the election commission.
Nine of the checks were for people under the age of 14.
Billy Joe Henegar says off camera he's innocent. His neighbor stand behind him.
"I never have and I still don't believe it. I have known him too long," says Wells.
Chief Davis says the department is looking for donations to help recover some of the lost money.
He also says the next treasurer and the money will be watched closely so this doesn't happen again.
Chief Davis says he will take over as treasurer until someone is hired.
The Henegar's have both bonded out of jail and say they will meet with their lawyer Wednesday.
A Bradley County Deputy was involved in a shooting early this morning.
