3,000 Chattanoogans vying for 200 housing vouchers

CHATTANOOGA, TN. (AP) - About 3,000 people have applied for 200 housing vouchers the Chattanooga Housing Authority is offering.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports the vouchers help low-income residents afford rent in private housing in a program formerly known as Section 8.

For the first time, the housing authority will use a lottery to decide who receives the vouchers. In the past, the authority has used a waiting list, with vouchers going to the people who had been on the list the longest.

Housing officials said the decision to use a lottery helped them avoid a situation like one in East Point, Ga., earlier this year, where about 30,000 people showed up for 455 vouchers and some children were nearly trampled.

The housing authority will hold the lottery drawing Oct. 29. Officials hope to have the winners in homes by year's end.
