Chattanooga, TN (WRCB) -- Top-ranked Baylor remained unbeaten thanks to a missed extra point in a 21-20 victory over third-ranked Brentwood Academy on Friday night at Heywood Stadium.
But Jacob Huesman had a hand in it, as well.
The Baylor quarterback outgained the Eagles by himself, rushing for 106 yards and two scores, and throwing for 189 more on 14-of-17 passing.
The Red Raiders jumped out in front on their first drive with an 18-yard touchdown run by Huesman, but the Eagles answered right back to tie it at 7. Special teams bit Baylor in the second quarter when a botched punt set up a short Eagles score for a 14-7 halftime lead.
That defecit remained until Huesman took over in the final period. With eight minutes to play, Huesman took a handoff from Matt Oellrich and delivered a Tim Tebow-esque jump pass to Wyatt McRae for a 5-yard touchdown on fourth and goal at the Brentwood Academy five-yard line.
The play knotted the score at 14 briefly, but Huesman delivered again with a 37-yard tie-breaking run four minutes later.
But the Red Raiders' special teams quickly put the lead in jeapordy once again, giving up a huge return on the ensuing kickoff that set up a short Eagles' run in the final minute.
The extra point that would have tied the game sailed wide left.
Baylor improves to 7-0 on the season. They're off next week before facing Ensworth High School after that. The Red Raiders haven't started 8-0 since 1978.
