(CHATTOOGA COUNTY, GA) WRCB- Chattooga County detectives are waiting on a shooting suspect to sober up before they can piece together a murder investigation.

Detectives say 69 year old William Packer called dispatchers to report a shooting around 3:30 Wednesday.  When deputies arrived they found this 48 year old James Kirby dead from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.  He was lying in the carport at Packer's house on John Jones Road. Chattooga County Sheriff John Everett says the Kirby and Packer were friends.  He's not sure if the two had been arguing before the shooting and says it's too early to tell what happened.  The only eyewitness, Packer, isn't talking.

Sheriff Everett says, "I don't think he's made any statements, he's very intoxicated."

Everett says Packer does have a history of firing a gun while intoxicated.  He also has a former aggravated assault charge.  Packer is in custody, but has not been charged with a crime.
