CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - A recently released report names a Chattanooga neighborhood as one of the most dangerous in the country.
The King Street neighborhood is listed as the 10th most dangerous in the United States.
Its main borders are Central Avenue, Main Street, Highway 27 and East 8th Street.
The predicted number of violent crimes in the neighborhood is 114 per year.
Also, your chances of becoming a victim of a violent crime within a year are one-in-nine.
The Chattanooga Police Department has a different say in the matter.
They say the area hasn't been on their radar since 2004, but this report does raise a red flag.
The police, as well as business owners in the area, say they are surprised to have made this list.
Police say there may be a mix-up in data.
Sue Markley of Gallery 14 says the latest Chattanooga crime statistics can't be accurate.
"I couldn't imagine it being in the top ten in Chattanooga. I am surprised," says Markley.
According to neighborhoodscoutreports.com, Chattanooga has the 10th most violent neighborhood in America.
The neighborhood ranks higher than Charlotte, Memphis, and even parts of Chicago.
According to this survey, King is the centralized location for many of these problems. In fact you have a one-in-nine chance of becoming a victim of a crime.
Chattanooga Police say being placed on this list raises a red flag, and a lot of questions.
"I'm shocked we made the list, but I would like to know where that data comes from," says Sgt. Jerri Weary, spokesperson for the Chattanooga Police Department.
According to the website, the group used federal data to come to this conclusion.
Sgt. Weary says the findings of this report, like many reports in the past, could have skewed or outdated crime statistics.
She also says Chattanooga has five King Streets, but the King Street identified in this study, has only had 43 incident calls since 2004.
"To say it is one of the most violent and dangerous in Chattanooga, really goes against the data," says Sgt. Weary.
Sue Markley feels the same way.
She says in 12 years of business, the most she has had happen to her business is panhandling.
"I think for this area, they have the numbers all wrong. Not sure about the other," says Markley.
An independent study shows Chattanooga is one of the most violent cities in the country.
A report by the OCHS Center says Chattanooga ranks 11th in the country for crimes, ahead of Detroit and Atlanta.
The study is based on cities with more than 100,000 people.
Property crimes ranked number one in the city.
While violent crimes like murder saw a decline.
