CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- Both McCallie and Baylor agreed it was a picture perfect night at Finley Stadium on Friday. However, when the lights went out, only Baylor remained perfect... as in 6-0.
Behind a stout defense and a methodical ground game, the Red Raiders won their second straight over their cross-town rival 27-6 in front of more than 12,000 fans.
Baylor's defense limited the Blue Tornado offense to 196 total yards and a pair of field goals. Linebacker David Helton also set the tone for the game by recovering a McCallie fumble to set up Baylor's opening score.
"It's a great feeling," said Baylor head coach Phil Massey, who helped the Red Raiders snap an 11-game losing streak to McCallie a year ago. "There's going to be a lot of things said about tonight, but my biggest hat goes off to the defense for keeping them out of the end zone.
"They're a very scary offense, and our defense really stood up. Our offense and defense both played hard for four quarters, and we knew that's what it was going to take."
Jacob Huesman threw for a score and ran for another, while George Porter scored twice on the ground as part of a 102-yard night to pace the Baylor offense.
The Red Raiders' first-ever win over McCallie at Finley Stadium, coupled with top-ranked Brentwood Academy's loss Thursday night, could push Baylor into the No. 1 spot in the Division II-AA state rankings next week.
