HAMILTON COUNTY, TN (WRCB) -- A new convenience for Hamilton County taxpayers, especially those struggling to make ends meet.  They won't have to come up with their entire property tax payment at once.

If taxpayers didn't have the full amount of their property taxes they were not able to make a payment before, but with the new changes starting October 1st they can.

The Hamilton County Trustee, Bill Hullander, went before County Commission Thursday morning and outline his plan.

The plan allows taxpayers to make partial payments on what they owe at anytime of the year.

He says that you can pay as much as you want or as little as you want starting October 1st through the end of February, without paying interest or penalties.

"This is what we feel like a to great day for Hamilton County we have had a lot of taxpayers asking us to set up where they can make partial payments and they'll be able to start that tomorrow," says Hullander.

After March 1st tax payers will have to pay 1.5% interest and penalties per month.

Hullander says, Hamilton County is one of the first counties to adapt this payment plan so fast.

Also at Thursday's meeting, Commissioners finalized their plans to reimburse homeowners who overpaid property taxes.

The reimbursements apply to residents who filed Chapter 7 or 13 bankruptcy, but were then sued by the County for back taxes and penalties.

Commissioners approved to repay the original amount, plus 2.43% interest, on top of any late fees they paid.
