CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- Fire broke out early Tuesday evening in the La-Z-Boy Furniture Gallery at 1932 Gunbarrel Road.

The manager reportedly heard a popping sound in the warehouse behind the gallery and went to investigate.  When he opened the door, thick, black smoke billowed out and activated the fire alarm system.

The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 6:44 p.m. and responded to the scene with six fire companies.  The building's sprinkler system kept the fire in check until firefighters could get hand-held hose lines inside the warehouse, where they quickly extinguished the fire.

The fire damage was limited to a few pieces of furniture, but the entire warehouse and its contents sustained significant smoke damage.  An estimate on the dollar loss was still being assessed at the time of this release.  The gallery appeared to have only light smoke damage.  Firefighters were using high velocity fans to ventilate both buildings.

The manager of the gallery suffered some smoke inhalation and was transported by Hamilton County EMS to Erlanger Medical Center.  The manager's injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

The fire appears to have started around an air compressor in a furniture repair area in the warehouse.  The building's sprinkler system did a great job of containing the fire until Chattanooga firefighters arrived to finish putting the flames out in the warehouse.
