CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)-- A man stabbed in the heart tells Eyewitness News he's on the mend.

DeAngelo said he's sore, but he's in good spirits.

He says doctors were planning to get him up for a short walk Friday and he was hoping to eat a little bit.

He's still trying to come to grips with why he's in the hospital in the first place.

Eyewitness News spoke to Lovingood Friday morning. He says he's doing better and didn't know until he woke up from surgery that he was stabbed in the heart.

His ex-girlfriend, Kearia Baker, is charged in the attack.

Doranda Siler says she saw Baker stab Lovingood in the heart. She says at first they were just arguing.

"It was a girl on the sidewalk grabbing on his hair, pulling on his dreads. I asked the young lady to leave the front of my house because she's being disrespectful," says Doranda Siler.

Siler says the argument ended with Baker stabbing Lovingood in the heart with wire cutters.

"After she stabbed him in the chest, he grabbed his chest and I started seeing blood. So I tried to figure out where the blood was coming from, so I lift up his shirt and I see he had a hole in his chest," says Siler.

Gloria Appling, Lovingood's grandmother, says this should have never happened in the first place.

"I don't think that any relationship, or whatever's going wrong, should go to that degree. It should not go that far," says Appling.

Baker turned herself in to police Thursday night. She's charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.

She posted a $40,000 bond and is out of jail.

She's due in court October 5th.
