UTC Music Dept. warns of scammers

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - Officials at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga Music Department say scammers are pretending to represent the school to collect money.

Administrative assistant Terry Sanford says they have received reports of people going door-to-door claiming to be collecting money for the UTC choir and orchestra to pay for a European tour. He says while they are planning a trip for March, they are not soliciting donations door-to-door.

Sanford said, "We have received 12 phone calls from people in the Chattanooga area who have had someone knock on their door supposedly collecting donations for the UTC Choir and Orchestra. The callers are telling us that the people are doing two different approaches – some are just claiming the choir and orchestra is going on a European tour in the spring and that they are collecting donations; the others are claiming to be taking orders for books with a portion of the proceeds going to the music department for the choir and/or orchestra for a European tour."

Sanford adds, "The sad and scary part is that it is true that the Choir will be going to Europe in the Spring and they will be doing some legitimate fund-raising events later on this year. But our students would not be allowed to do door-to-door solicitations in this manner. Our events will be well-publicized and would more typically be things like a public concert with donations taken at the door. We don't want people to be confused about our legitimate activities (such as the annual Beat Hunger Concert where we collect food for Chattanooga Food Kitchen)."

Sanford concluded by saying, "If someone shows up asking for money for the UTC Music Department in the next few days, do not give them money, just call the police."
