CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)-- It's crunch time for the group working to recall Chattanooga's mayor.

They have about a week left to get the required 9,000 signatures.

After turning in another 2,500 earlier this week, petitioners are scrambling to meet their deadline.

This group is out every day gathering more and more signatures all over the city. They say they have over 10,000 now, but their goal is to gather enough to buffer those that could be thrown out by the election commission.

Jim Faulkner and Floyd Kilpatrick hit the road Saturday morning and by mid-day already have more than 50 signatures.

"Today we started out on Brainerd Road going to the different businesses there," says Kilpatrick.

They visited barber shops, and restaurants along Brainerd and Tunnel Boulevard and the signatures just kept coming in.

"There's been a lot of concern about whether or not the minority owned businesses have been adequately represented," says Kilpatrick.

Frunsez Kendricks works at Clee's Barber Shop and was more than willing to sign his name.

"The city is growing but the crime rate is growing at the same time and we have no help with that," says Frunsez.

With little more than a week to go, the group has their work cut out for them.

"We've got 10,000 signatures now and we're working toward getting 12-13,000. We hope that we'll have to a good buffer for the ones that get thrown out," says Faulkner.

After turning in a new batch of signatures earlier this week the group suffered a slight set back.

"Some of the signatures have been thrown out. We're trying to really get them done correctly so that it's clear to the election commission that the person did sign the petition and wants to recall the mayor," says Faulkner.

Even if the petitioners get the required number of signatures, that doesn't make the recall automatic.

It would then go on the November ballot for a final vote from the people.

The group says they have been giving some thought towards a specific candidate to run against the mayor, but for now feel it's best to focus only on the recall efforts.
