Military historian William Breuer dies at 87
CLEVELAND, TN. (AP) - William B. Breuer, a military historian and author of the book, "The Great Raid," has died. He was 87.
Tom Cloud, a director at the Ralph Buckner Funeral Home in Cleveland, confirmed Breuer passed away at a Chattanooga hospital on Wednesday.
The Cleveland Daily Banner reports Breuer was born in Rolla, Mo., and served in World War II before he later founded a daily newspaper, The Rolla Herald.
After 10 years as a small-town publisher, Breuer and his wife moved to St. Louis where they opened a public relations firm, the Daily Banner reports. They went on to settle in Cleveland where he wrote much of his nonfiction work.
Breuer's nonfiction book, "The Great Raid," became a 2005 movie starring Benjamin Bratt that chronicled a daring rescue mission in World War II. It's among his 41 books, according to the newspaper.
A memorial service will be held for him at the funeral home Saturday afternoon.
