Hamilton Schools will likely start early again next year

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)- Despite the pleas of some parents to "save our summers," Hamilton County School Board members are expected to approve a calendar for the 2011-12 year similar to the current one.

At Thursday's Board meeting, Superintendent Jim Scales will introduce a calendar that would mirror this year's: registration would be Wednesday August 3, 2011 with classes beginning the following Wednesday August 10, 2011.

Due to the intense heat this summer, several schools have reported air conditioning problems, including Red Bank Elementary, Orchard Knob Middle, Woodmore Elementary and Ooltewah Middle.  Statewide, some parents have organized a campaign called "Save Our Summers," encouraging local School Boards to delay the start of school until late August or early September.

There have also been concerns about heat-related injuries during football and band practices, and some schools have kept children inside for recess rather than expose them to near 100-degree temperatures.

Educators say the current and proposed calendars are better suited for testing and holidays.  The first semester ends just before the Christmas holiday break.  It also allows for a fall break, scheduled for mid-October.  The last day of school is scheduled for May 22, a week before Memorial Day.
