UPDATE: Man shot by East Ridge Police dies

Posted: Updated:

EAST RIDGE, TN. (WRCB)-- New details on a story we first brought you Monday night.

East Ridge police say the man shot multiple times by officers has died.

Police say 54-year-old Charles Harvey came to the police department and asked to see an officer... He said he had a serious problem.

When officers came out, they saw he had a gun in his waistband.

Police say he went for the weapon and that's when the two officers fired.

It turned out to be a pellet gun.

Investigators believe Harvey wanted to die and say he looked to be under intense pressure.

"He was definitely under some duress. We made attempts to get him to stop saying, 'hey don't go towards the gun or make any movements'," says Erik Hopkins, spokesperson for the East Ridge Police Department.

The two officers are on paid leave, and the TBI is investigating.

We are working to get the 911 call Harvey made before the shooting.
