UTC suspends summer graduation after 2011
CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)-- While some plan to return to the classroom, UTC students are celebrating the end of their college career.
Commencement was held Saturday at McKenzie Arena.
Nearly 400 students walked the stage.
Interim President of the University of Tennessee Dr. Jan Simek delivered the commencement address.
The graduation is bittersweet. School officials say the university will suspend summer graduation after 2011.
The measure is meant to cut costs.
"Many institutions have found you can easily consolidate into May and December and save those additional costs. And it's part of our goal to help reduce where ever possible costs to the students," says UTC Provost Phillip Olden.
In the future, students finishing their degrees in the summer will have a choice to walk with the graduating class in May or December.
