CHATTANOOGA (WRCB/AP) - Chattanooga attorney Chuck Fleischmann has won the GOP primary in southeast Tennessee's 3rd Congressional District.
Shortly before 11:00 p.m. Eastern, it was announced that Fleischmann that he had narrowly defeated former GOP chair Robin Smith.
"As the night developed we were a little bit concerned because we were down and knew it was going to be a nail biter and when we went up it was like wow. It was incredible," Fleischman tells WRCB Eyewitness News.
Fleischmann won the endorsement of former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee and mostly self-funded his campaign.
Smith, whose term as GOP leader saw the party take control of the Legislature but also be criticized for 2008 attacks that implied then-candidate Obama was a Muslim, was endorsed by the Club for Growth.
