Haslam wins GOP nomination for governor

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam won the Republican nomination for governor Thursday as voters battled stifling heat in the state primary.

Several contentious Congressional and legislative races were close shortly after the polls closed.

Haslam capped an expensive 19-month campaign by beating U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp of Chattanooga and state Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey of Blountville.

A heat index in the triple digits walloped candidates and their supporters while some polling places reported glitches that at least briefly deterred voters.

There also was rain in some areas.

Top races on the ballot included GOP contests for governor and three open congressional seats plus a Democratic contest in the 9th House District in Memphis.
