Very hot weather begins August

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - August is beginning with dangerously hot weather in Tennessee.

The National Weather Service posted an excessive heat warning for a half-dozen counties in the state's southwestern corner, beginning Monday. Memphis is in the warned area and forecasters say high temperatures at or above 100 degrees are expected through Thursday. Heat indexes might soar to 115 degrees.

Other West Tennessee counties are under a heat advisory or an excessive heat watch for most of the week and the heat advisory extends into southern Middle Tennessee.

Midweek temperatures are expected to reach 100 degrees in Nashville, the upper 90s in the Chattanooga area and the mid-90s around Knoxville and the Tri-Cities.

The heat index - the combination of air temperature and relative humidity - is forecast at 108 degrees by Wednesday afternoon in Chattanooga.
