Commissioner Paul McDaniel to be honored Sunday

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)-- A legislative legend will be honored this Sunday.

Former Hamilton County Commissioner Paul McDaniel will join friends and dignitaries attending the dedication of a county building named in his honor Sunday afternoon.

The McDaniel Building is the former Life Care Center Building of America on North Highland Park Avenue across from Orchard Knob Middle School.

Following a suggestion by Commissioner Greg Beck to his fellow commissioners the commission in February voted unanimously to honor Reverend McDaniel with this unique honor.

Reverend McDaniel served as a commissioner for twenty years and was elected commission chairman five times and vice chair four times.

Reverend McDaniel's legislative career began with controversy when it was questioned whether he could serve as an elected official while a member of the clergy. The United States Supreme Court ruled that McDaniel could serve and minister which he did with distinction for two decades.

The McDaniel Building will house Hamilton County‘s new in-house pharmacy and fitness center as well as offices that are being relocated from downtown.
