COLLEGEDALE, HAMILTON COUNTY (WRCB) – After nearly four hours of work, rescue crews were able to pull a trapped man from a collapsed trench on Heathwood Drive.

The man was pulled from the trench around 12:50 a.m. Thursday.

According to Amy Maxwell, spokesperson for Hamilton County EMS, the 19-year-old man was trapped in the collapsed trench approximately 20-feet underground.

The collapse happened around 9:15 p.m.

The man was working for Allied Civil Contracting, a contractor for the City of Collegedale, on a sewer line for a new subdivision.

Maxwell says six men were working on the sewer line when the trench collapsed in front of the trench box - a safety device used to prevent collapses - that loose dirt filled the hole.

A witness who spoke to Eyewitness News says the man was initially buried up to his neck.

Maxwell says the man was conscious and alert throughout the ordeal. A doctor was on scene with the man, looking after his condition.

At least 150 rescuers are on the scene from various agencies and are rotating into the rescue site to keep rescuers at full strength.

Eyewitness News is on scene and will have the latest as it becomes available.
