SODDY-DAISY, TN. (WRCB)-- The Soddy-Daisy Police Chief will soon put his duties on hold to serve over seas.

Chief Phil Hamrick is being deployed with the Navy Reserves to the Middle East.

He leaves next month for his second full tour of duty.

Family and friends got the chance to wish Hamrick well Sunday night at Charlie's Restaurant.

Hamrick says the department will be in good hands, the hard part will be leaving his family.

He and his wife have an 18-month-old daughter, and a son who will return from boot camp one week after Hamrick ships out.

Hamrick says he looks forward to returning home, but wouldn't miss an opportunity to serve his country.

"I can serve here, I can serve over there, it's just a matter of serving my country and my community," says Hamrick.

"I would prefer that he didn't have to go, but I think the men are going to stand behind him and support him and make sure his department stays good while he's gone," says Mayor Shipley.

Hamrick will be gone for 10 months to a year.

Lt. Jeff Gann will serve as interim chief while he's gone, but the position will be waiting on him when he gets back.
