Marion man gets 1 year in gunbattle death of relative

JASPER, MARION COUNTY (WRCB) - A Marion County man accused of shooting and killing his brother-in-law will spend a year behind bars.

Investigators say Donald Rankin and Matthew Layne got into a gun fight outside Whitwell Auto Parts in July 2008.

Thirteen shots were fired.

Matthew Layne was killed. Donald Rankin was seriously injured.

Rankin was later charged with murder.

He pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to a year in jail and seven years of supervised probation.
