Watchful neighbor helps police find suspect

EAST RIDGE, HAMILTON COUNTY, TN (WRCB)-- A watchful East Ridge resident helps police find burglary suspect.

On Thursday, at approximately 6:00pm East Ridge Police responded to 1122 Altamaha St. in reference to a burglary in progress.

A neighbor noticed a suspicious vehicle parked in her mother-in-laws driveway and went to investigate. As she approached the home a black male driver who was sitting in the vehicle began to honk the horn before speeding away. A white male suspect then exited the house and fled on foot.

Police were notified and arrived on the scene in less than one minute and immediately began a search of the area. An East Ridge K-9 officer located the suspect near the intersection of Altamaha St. and Anderson Ave. attempting to hide in a creek. The suspect who has been identified as Christopher J. Womack a 36 year old white male, of Chattanooga, TN. was taken into custody without further incident. Womack was transported to the Hamilton County Jail and charged with Aggravated Burglary. A court date has been scheduled for Tuesday July 13th at 5pm in East Ridge Municipal Court.

East Ridge Police officials continued to praise an ongoing effort to establish neighborhood watch programs through out the city. East Ridge Police Crime Prevention Division continues to see success when alert citizens have notified police of suspicious activity coupled with a fast police response.
