Tipped over tombstones in Cleveland

Posted: Updated:

CLEVELAND, BRADLEY COUNTY (WRCB) - Cleveland Police say it's a story that could make anyone turn over in their grave; vandals pushing over headstones at the Fort Hill Cemetery.

Police say recently they have gotten complaints over overturned tombstones. We counted over a dozen in one area.

Right now police are on the prowl for trouble-makers known to hang out at the cemetery.

"We have had various complaints like loitering and we have had graffiti on the headstones," Officer Evie West says.

Some graves were clearly victim of old age and wear, but newer graves would take powerful winds to knock over.

Police say a man filed a complaint June 21st after his in-laws graves were overturned.

They say it's not an unlikely story.

The Fort Hill Cemetery is over a century old with graves dating back to the 1800's.

Police plan to monitor the site more closely hoping to catch vandals in the act.

They say if it is someone looking to cause trouble, officers are ready to make an arrest.
