CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- A few new laws went into effect on Thursday, in Tennessee.
One allows handgun permit holders to carry their weapons while big game bow hunting.
Another makes it clear, ammunition can be transported alongside rifles or shotguns, as long as the weapon is not actually loaded.
Another measure passed during the session allows permit holders to take their guns in to bars and restaurants that serve alcohol. Bar and restaurant owners still have the power to ban all weapons from their establishments.
Another law is to crack down on convicted armed robbers. This new laws require offenders to serve at least 70-percent of their sentence. That's up from 30-percent. It means most criminals will spend at least six years behind bars. The longer prison time will be paid for by transferring sentences for first-time convictions of about 20 nonviolent felonies to community corrections programs.
