CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)-- A man died today after falling off the roof of a church he was working on.

The 71-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and church members are devastated.

Right now everything is under investigation.

Police say it was not a medical condition that caused this fall.

Right now people want to know what was this man was doing on the roof at this age and police hope to get answers.

"There was a lot of commotion going on, I didn't really know what happened," says Melvin Frost.

Little did Melvin Frost know, a tragedy struck right across the street.

Police say 71-year old Joseph Wilson was working on the roof of the New Monumental Baptist Church, when suddenly he feel 30 feet to his death.

Emergency workers pronounced him dead at the scene.

Frost only saw commotion.

"I did look across the street and I saw the yellow tape. I knew something tragic had happened," says Frost.

Pastor Roderick Ware says workers have been remodeling the church for a couple months.

Ware says you never know when something like this will happen.

"How and when things happen is unfortunate and we wish we could control that," says Ware.

Ware says he caught word of the Wilson's fall early Wednesday morning and wanted to know why the elderly man was on the roof in the first place.

His employer, Bill Moates Siding and Windows, isn't listed in the phone book and an internet search doesn't pull up a company web page.

What we do know is the company is based out of Red Bank.

Ware says until he gets answers, his church will try to help console Wilson's family any way they can.

"I think first of all we wish we could know when and where. Our condolences to the family," says Ware.

"It is a tragedy. You never think anything like this is going to happen," says Frost.

We are working to find a business license for this company, meanwhile police say they will continue to investigate the fall.

We are told foul play is not suspected.
