City Driver Ed Classes Available in September

By David Carroll

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)- If you've ever wondered why so many young drivers follow too closely, text behind the wheel, and merge clumsily into traffic, Bruce Johnson has the answer.

"They simply haven't learned the rules of the road," according to Johnson, an instructor for Haman's New Drivers.  Johnson and his colleagues are hard at work this summer to change that.

They're part of Chattanooga's new Driver Education Program, funded in part by the city's traffic enforcement cameras.  The program began last fall, and through word-of-mouth advertising, has completely sold out its four summer courses.

"It's a great bargain," according to Program Director Caroline Johnson.  "The Haman course ordinarily costs almost four hundred dollars, but city residents only have to pay fifty dollars. That's an incredibly small price to pay for the life-saving lessons these teens learn, not to mention the car insurance savings for their parents."

After school classes in September and October are accepting applications now, and officials advise teens to sign up early.
