CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - The Chattanooga Police Department is putting some cutting-edge technology to the test.

They say it's the next step in fighting crime and it's the size of a cell phone.

It's a tactical computer officers can carry at all times. The unit contains a headset equipped with a video camera and a microphone.

The technology is not even available on the market yet.

In fact, the Chattanooga Police Department is one of the first in the country to try it out.

The system will provide a first-person view of everything an officer sees. It also allows officers to have two-way communication.

Leaders say it's some added protection for officers on the street.

"It lets them, for evidentiary purposes for court later, record what happened. And also it's provable, if we get a complaint, one way or another. Here's what happened because right there's the video," says Assistant Chief Mike Williams.

CPD is one of eight in the country testing this equipment for the Taser-Axon company.

Department leaders say they are considering the technology, but it could be some time before it's available.
