Clingmans Dome Road reopens in Smokies

GATLINBURG, TN. (AP) - Visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park can again drive to Clingmans Dome.

Rising to 6,643 feet and straddling the Tennessee-North Carolina border, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the Smokies.

Wet weather put the contractor resurfacing the road a bit behind schedule for a planned reopening on Saturday.

National Park Service spokeswoman Nancy Gray said the road reopened about noon Monday.

Some completion work such as lane striping and shoulder grading will call for short stretches of 1-lane traffic.
