CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)- Lea Ann Burk was all smiles as she exited Thursday's Hamilton County School Board meeting.  Amid the controversy, tension, and hand-wringing, the Brown Academy principal was able to share a major piece of good news.  Her school has been named Tennessee's first International Baccalaureate elementary school.

Brown Academy educators had worked hard for the past few years studying and applying for the designation, and it couldn't come at a better time.  Brown will be welcoming a growing number of children of Volkswagen executives, many from Germany.  Ms. Burk told Eyewitness News, "I just got back from vacation, and was greeted by this news.  It was a great welcome home present, and my faculty is so excited.  They're ready to get busy!"

Here is more information on the IB World School program, from the Brown Academy website:

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable & caring young people who help to create a better & more peaceful world through intercultural understanding & respect.
To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education & rigorous assessment.
These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate & lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Brown International Academy believes is important for our students.
*Only schools authorized by the IB organization can offer any of its three academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), or the Diploma Programme. *For further information about the IB and its programmes, visit
