UPDATED: Suspect captured in E. Brainerd homicide

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) – Chattanooga Police have announced the capture of the man suspected of killing an East Brainerd man Thursday.

Andrew Graves, 24, was taken into custody Thursday night by CPD. Authorities say he had been hiding in a home at 1110 Elrod Street Place in Cleveland, TN.

Police say Graves shot and killed Michael Newby, 23, Thursday morning at a home on North Concord Road in the East Brainerd area.

"It's sad, it's really sad because we have lived here 42 years and nothing like this has ever happened," says Rose Camp, a North Concord Road resident.

Neighbors who live on North Concord Road are in shock.

"The cars and the cops and the crime units, I just kind of stopped in the road shocked," says neighbor Erin Simonds.

Twenty-three-year-old Michael Newby was shot early Thursday morning in his own home.

"When the officer got to the scene he found the victim laying face down behind the residence," explains Officer Rebecca Royval.

Investigators believe the suspect, Andrew Graves, and the victim, Michael Newby, knew each other.

"The suspect came in the front door as the victim ran out the back door," says Officer Royval. "The victim ran back in the front door and was shot in the head."

Investigators spent all day Thursday processing the crime scene, but right now police say they don't have a motive in the crime.

As for neighbors that live in the community they say, "I just pray they will find out who did it and justice will be served," says Zula Hall.
