Ambition lures lawmakers away from Capitol

ATLANTA (AP) - As many as one in five lawmakers will head to the Gold Dome as new senators and representatives when the 2011 Legislature convenes in January.

While some of their predecessors are retiring, much of the turnover can be blamed on a wide open election season in Georgia, as dozens of ambitious legislators have set their sights on higher offices.

In addition to a U.S. Senate seat and all 13 U.S. House seats, all of the state's constitutional offices are up for grabs - a proposition too hard for some at the Capitol to resist.

Lawmakers routinely rotate out after a few terms, choosing to retire or forced out after a defeat.

For others, the desire to leave can mean switching chambers or using their office as a stepping stone.
