ALCOA, TVA face 12 month deadline on contract

MARYVILLE, TN. (AP) - ALCOA and the Tennessee Valley Authority have 12 months to work out a power contract that could lead to smelting operations restarting at the company's South Plant.

The Maryville Daily Times reports that TVA directors approved the 1-year extension agreement with ALCOA in an unanimous vote at its board meeting Thursday in Jackson.

The current contract was scheduled to run out at the end of June.

ALCOA spokesman Kevin Lowery says the extension allows long-term contract negotiations to continue while the rolling mill, recycling and hydro operations keep working.

About 450 Tennessee Operations employees were laid off after the smelting was curtailed in March 2009.
