Knox Co. owes IRS $1.2 million

Posted: Updated:

KNOXVILLE (AP) - Knox County owes the Internal Revenue Service about $1.2 million after auditors found the county didn't pay some taxes on employee compensation several years ago.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reported on Saturday that last week federal representatives agreed to a compromise and local officials agreed to pay the money by the end of the month.

Knox County Senior Director of Finance John Troyer said the county didn't pay Social Security taxes on its retirement contributions from the early 1990s through part of 2007 when it discovered the error.
