JASPER, MARION COUNTY (WRCB) -- A Marion County man accused of beating another man to death over the Memorial Day weekend was in court Monday morning.

Nineteen-year-old Cody Anderson had little to say in court. He only whispered to his attorney, but the mother of the man he's charged with murdering had plenty to say to us.

"This hopefully sending this boy to jail will give me the closure I need," says Jeannie Patten.

Patten is talking about 19-year-old Cody Anderson. He's accused of beating her son, 34-year-old Jeremy Hughes.

"You never meet a sweeter person in life. He'll go out of his way to make somebody laugh," says Patten.

But it's only tears now for Patten. She says she doesn't know Anderson, only that he lived next door to her son on Chambers Road in Marion County.

Investigators say Hughes had been beaten to death.

"He was hit over the head several times and it was hard to hear but harder not being able to see the body," says Patten.

Detectives say Hughes and Anderson had argued before the beating.

"I don't know for sure, it may have been drug related," says Patten.

Investigators won't say what it was about, but did say Anderson confessed to detectives. They also say he used a metal stake to beat Hughes, something that's painful for Patten to imagine.

"I should be saying take his life, that would be too easy. I want him to everyday think about what he did to my son and live with it for the rest of his life," says Patten.

Anderson has a pending aggravated assault charge from another case. His bond hearing for both charges was re-scheduled for Wednesday.
