TN teacher evaluations

NASHVILLE. (AP) - Under a new state law, every public teacher's evaluation must include a consideration of how much their students have learned.

That's easy when those students take standardized tests. But some teachers have students who don't take those exams, like kindergartners or students in music and physical education classes.

WPLN reports a panel of educators and state lawmakers is trying to figure out how to evaluate the effectiveness of those teachers.

Kenny Lou Heaton, who teaches career and technical classes in Carter County, is on the panel.

She said teachers whose work is evaluated by standardized tests are likely complain if they think others aren't being held to as strict a set of expectations.

She said that whatever evaluation options are created, they should provide hard data that clearly fulfills the letter of the law.
