NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Files and audio recordings collected by police officers regarding how former Nashville Police Chief Ronal Serpas kept crime statistics were stolen from a lawyer's office.
The Tennessean reported that Jack Byrd, a lawyer for the Teamsters union when it represented the city's police officers, said he had been collecting information from officers over four years, but that the private investigation was no longer active.
Nashville police are investigating the theft of those materials - including recordings of Serpas - from Byrd's Nashville office May 12 or May 13.
Nashville Mayor Karl Dean has requested an audit of the crime stats kept by Serpas, who left Nashville earlier this month to take over the New Orleans Police Department.
