A major crime put a small Tennessee town in the headlines this weekend. Local and federal authorities say a man robbed the Post Office in Whiteside and kidnapped a postal employee.
Monday the robber is still at large, but investigators feel certain his motives were drug related. The post office did not open Monday morning and locals say they still can't believe it happened in their small, quiet community.
"They said it was closed that they'd had a robbery and check back on Monday to see if it's open," says Mandy Hillary. She visited the office shortly after the robbery Saturday.
The Whiteside Post Office wasn't open for business Monday after the Saturday morning armed robbery in which the postmaster was briefly taken hostage.
"That's really scary, really scary," says Hillary who lives nearby. Blink and you just might miss the tiny community of Whiteside.
"No sense in robbing a small post office like this," says resident Floyd Kennedy. "There's nothing in this post office."
Kennedy says he heard about the robbery and what happened to the young postmaster soon after Saturday.
"Why take her down there and hold her for an hour," he wonders. "What was he waiting for".
That's a questions investigators are trying to figure out. After taking what he wanted the robber took the young woman to a creek bed barely a mile down the road. He didn't harm her before she was released.
"We're glad she's alright," Kennedy says.
In a community with no mail delivery the postmaster literally knows everyone in town. She often talks to them when they stop by to check their mail.
"She's a nice lady," Floyd says. "She's a good girl."
As locals drop in and out throughout the day the weekend incident is a hot topic.
"I just still don't understand why anybody would do this," the man says. "Yeah I do. Like I said he's a drug addict, he's stupid."
