CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)- Red Bank Middle School principal Katie O'Brien announced she is retiring at the end of the school year.

Ms. O'Brien has been principal of the school for the past two years.  She says she plans to do some traveling, and "do anything the school system needs me to do.  I love helping children, and I will never stop doing that."

She began her career in education in 1981 as a kindergarten teacher at Charles A. Bell Elementary School.  She then taught at Hixson Elementary for the next 20 years.  In 2001, she became a sixth-grade math teacher at Signal Mountain Middle School and moved to Red Bank Middle School as assistant principal in 2004.  She moved to East Ridge Middle School as an assistant principal in 2005 before going back to Red Bank Middle School in 2006.

Red Bank Middle is due for a new building in the near future, to be built next to the current Red Bank High School on Morrison Springs Road.  A construction start date has yet to be announced.

Ms. O'Brien is the second middle school principal to announce a retirement this month.  John Stewart of Brown Middle School also announced his retirement.  No replacement has been named for either principal.
