Nashville flood prompts worry over unemployment checks

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - A lot of Channel 3 viewers are worried about their unemployment benefits after the flooding in Nashville. Our newsroom took several calls today from people trying to file for unemployment. Many were unable to get through on the phone or online. They worried about not receiving a check this week.

A spokesperson for the Department of Labor tells Channel 3 Eyewitness News that the main office and one major call center was evacuated because of the threat of flooding. They should be able to return to offices tomorrow.

Calls to that call center were diverted to Johnson City, Chattanooga and Knoxville. A third-party company handles the department's Internet application. It experienced power outages and water issues Tuesday so some Internet applications went down today.

However, no information was lost.  It just went off-line.

People trying to certify for benefits are certified for next week's check. This week's checks were mailed yesterday.

Everything is expected to return to normal tomorrow. The Department of Labor urges everyone to keep trying and have patience during this difficult time in Nashville.
