CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)-  For the first time in three years, the new school year will begin with a Convocation at McKenzie Arena.   The event is scheduled on Tuesday August 3, and  "is intended as a professional development activity for all HCDE employees," according to Communications Director Danielle Clark.  She said, "They get to network with peers and colleagues and then we bring in a motivational speaker.  We also recognize the longest-standing HCDE employee and do a spirit roll call by school."

The speaker will be Dr. Adolph Brown III, who also spoke to Hamilton County school employees at the most recent Convocation in 2007.  "He will be speaking about educating all students as well as renew our employees' enthusiasm for being educators and tie it all into Race to the Top," according to Ms. Clark.  At the 2007 event, Dr. Brown entered the Arena wearing gang-like attire, interacting with several teachers, who had no idea he would be the keynote speaker.  He is the Dean of the Graduate College at Hampton University.

The event is scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m. and continue until 12 noon.

Ms. Clark said private companies are paying for the event, which is projected to cost around $40,000.
