CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)- Stunned teens looked on with tears in their eyes Wednesday afternoon as they saw their worst fears acted out by fellow students.

A simulated drunk driving crash, featuring Hixson High students and various law enforcement agencies, gave Hixson teens a close-up look at real-life tragedies.

The Chattanooga Fire Department, Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department, Hamilton County EMS, Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, Angel EMS, State Farm Insurance, and Advisory Council on Traffic Safety Chairman Larry Henry worked with Hixson High to stage the accident.

Health Department officials try to present several such simulations each year, usually during spring prom season, to dramatize what happens all too often when teens mix drinking and driving.

The crash, complete with grieving friends and parents, traffic officers and emergency responders, is a replica of an often-repeated scene, according to Health Department officials.  Juniors and seniors from Hixson High played the roles of victims and friends, illustrating the grim realities such tragedies present.

Hixson High principal Christine Couch thanked those who participated, calling it a valuable lesson for young drivers.
